When Workshop/APD set out to design its debut outdoor collection, their goal was clear: to create furniture that carried the same thoughtful layering and versatility for which the firm is known. “So much of our work is about the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces,” says DLM Member Matt Berman. “Outdoor spaces really make a home or any experience feel larger.”
Through a collaboration with DLN Partner Sutherland Furniture, the team set out to elevate outdoor living, crafting pieces that are as functional as they are beautiful. The collection features a versatile sofa with an adaptable back configuration, a lounge chair with wheels to follow the sun, and sculptural details inspired by the lightness of a floating boat. “We wanted materials that would last but with a shape and elegance that feels weightless,” Berman explains.
Drawing on 25 years of experience designing for discerning clients, Workshop/APD brought deep market knowledge to the project. “We know the problems because we get the calls,” Berman notes, referring to the durability challenges of outdoor furniture. The result? A collection that isn’t just aesthetically refined but built to endure.
With a shared vision for integrating outdoor and indoor living, the Workshop/APD x Sutherland partnership is redefining how we think about open-air spaces. “A successful collaboration is built on trust and respect,” says Berman. “And that’s exactly what we had here.”
