Glasgow Excursion

Glasgow Excursion

October 19, 2024

The Edinburgh Summit will just scratch the surface of Scottish architectural history. To dive deeper join us for a post-Summit Excursion to Glasgow, where we’ll explore three eras of the city’s architectural history in depth—including the groundbreaking but little-seen work of Greek Revival pioneer Alexander “Greek” Thomson.

On the first day, we’ll focus on the work of famed Glaswegian architect C. R. Mackintosh. Our first stop is Queens Cross Church, an early example of his work. We’ll have lunch at Mackintosh at the Willow, the original Willow Tea Rooms building built in 1903. After lunch, we’ll enjoy private tours of the Hunterian, the oldest public museum in Scotland, and Mackintosh House, a reassembly of the main rooms from Mackintosh’s Glasgow home.

The second day is dedicated to Alexander “Greek” Thomson. First, we’ll visit Holmwood House, Thomson’s most elaborate villa, commissioned by James Couper, a paper manufacturer. We will then tour 1 Moray Place, part of a terraced house that is considered to be one of Thomson’s most brilliant works, and Double Villa, a pair of semi-detached houses–both of them private residences. The day will conclude with a private tour and dinner at the Burrell Collection, which features significant holdings of Chinese art, medieval treasures, and paintings by Manet, Cezanne, and Degas.

Both days feature historical talks by experts, including Joseph Sharples, Curator of the Mackintosh and Applied Art and Design Collections at the Hunterian Museum & Art Gallery and Emma Inglis, Regional Curator of the National Trust for Scotland and expert on Alexander “Greek” Thomson.
