DLN Members got a behind-the-scenes look at the offerings.
What’s the next best thing to being stuck alone in a museum Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler-style? A private evening at Hindman’s Chicago gallery space is certainly up there. This week, DLN Members convened at the auction house’s West Loop HQ, which Hindman has called home since December 2022, to get a close-up look at items from the DLN Partner’s upcoming Postwar and Contemporary Art auction.
Standouts from the sale (which will happen online and in person tomorrow, September 28) include a rare savory Wayne Thibaud, featuring an avocado salad on a sky-blue background, a departure from the sweets and candies for which the artist was best known. The 1962 piece is expected to fetch between $1.2 and $1.8 million.
A small Warhol is unexpectedly timely again: the black-and-white canvas displays a map of Russian military locations. It’s mounted in a small frame and estimated between $50,000 and $70,000.
Both specialists in attendance had a soft spot for Katherine Bernhardt’s 2010 Hot Racer, one of a series depicting Swatch watches in bold colors. It’s estimated between $10,000 and $15,000.
There’s plenty of abstraction, too, like Stanley Boxer’s large-scale Snowflakedwebofsoftness, estimated between $8,000 and $12,000, and three-dimensional works, including a 1979 Sol LeWitt and a Claes Oldenburg sculpture of a splayed-open blueberry pie. Member Joy Williams was partial to Audrey Keeperman’s painterly color grids.
